A recent article talked about ten wedding traditions to break on your wedding day. They included things such as wearing a white dress and doing down the aisle to “Here Comes the Bride.” Because your wedding day is your special day, you should never feel obligated to do anything simply because people view it as a tradition. Here are three other wedding traditions you may want to throw out.
Dad Walking the Bride Down the Aisle
While it is great to have the bride’s father walk her down the aisle if that is what she wants, there is no reason that she should feel obligated to have her dad walk her down the aisle. Brides raised mostly by their mother may prefer having Mom walk them down the aisle instead. Others may pick a grandparent or even an older sibling. In a photo that went viral a couple of years ago, both the bride’s dad and stepdadwalked her down the aisle, which is a great option for brides who have two important father-figures in their lives. Brides can also completely ditch the idea of having anyone walk them down the aisle and walk down the aisle on their own.
Smashing the Cake in Each Other’s Faces
Often, the couple cuts the cake together. Then they start to lovingly feed the cake to each other. Quickly, the cake often ends up smashed all over both people’s faces. You are not obligated to smash the cake in each other’s faces. Whether you do not want cake smashed all over your face, you are worried about it making a mess of your dress, or you have another reason for wanting to skip this tradition, be sure to discuss it beforehand with your fiancé. Decide as a couple that this is something you do not want to do.
Throwing the Bouquet
As a bride, you spent time and money creating your perfect bouquet. You do not have to toss it. Instead, you can dry it out and preserve it, give it to a friend, break it up and give it to wedding guests, or do with it as you like. If you want to stick with tradition, but you do not want to lose out on your bouquet, you could opt to toss a smaller, less elaborate bouquet instead.
